About Woods (golf clubs wood)

General Definition

Golf clubs designated ‘woods’ (golf clubs wood) are intended for driving the ball long distances. They have heads with a large volume and longer shafts for max. head speed. The first woods were, in fact, made from wood. In 1979, TaylorMade Golf produced the first metal wood made of steel. In recent years, woods have been made from carbon fiber and titanium. Even though most ‘golf clubs wood’ are made from different metals, they are still called ‘woods’ to specify their shape and their intended use. Almost all the woods manufactured today are made from carbon fiber, titanium or steel and have graphite shafts. There’s three to four woods in a set which are used off the tee box and, if it’s a long hole, possibly for the second shot. Drivers are very large, so they are manufactured of hollow fiber moldings or titanium castings. The modern driver now averages about 45″ long. 460cc is now the standard for drivers, and fairway woods have gotten larger as well.

Golf clubs wood are no longer wood and, no doubt, will evolve even further in their physical characteristics.

Regulations

Two organizations, the R & A in Scotland and the USGA in the United States, govern the physical characteristics of all golf clubs (including golf clubs wood). Club faces are now being manufactured with high “trampoline effect” which produces greater distance. The coefficient of restitution (COR) of the spring effect has been limited by the governing bodies to 0.830.
